GRADY, NOW out of costume and makeup, flew off the stage and into Mitch’s arms.

Mitch gave him a fierce hug and whispered in his ear, “You were… the only word is, magnificent.”

“Aw, Mitch,” Grady whispered back, his breath brushing Mitch’s ear and causing him a sudden shiver.

Then Grady turned to Em and Sarah and gave each a hug and a big kiss on the cheek. The compliments flowed, and Grady, though obviously pleased, could only look at the floor.

“I have to stay for the party. It’s only a gathering onstage for nibbles and wine, and I’ll get away as soon as I can. I’d rather celebrate with you guys.”

“Don’t feel pressured to leave,” Mitch cautioned, but he fervently wished otherwise.

“No trouble. It was a great cast, but we really didn’t have time to bond much offstage. I won’t stay any longer than I have to. I just want to have a few words with Patty.”

“Okay,” Em said, “we’ll take our magic carriage and go home and wait for your triumphant entrance.”

“English teacher,” Mitch said.

Sarah stepped forward, as if to support Em, and actually took hold of her hand.

“I know she must have been a great teacher,” Sarah said.

“I was.”

“And modest,” Mitch added and got a slap on the hand.

“Tell your friend, Patty, we thought she was great too,” Em said.

They took their leave and returned to the waiting limo to be driven back to the Village.
